The goal of the LIVER association is to save the lives of children who
are suffering from lots different bile-flow and liver diseases. Some of the liver
transplants are not executed in Poland; thus, the help provided by "Liver" association
relies on brokering and arranging medical treatment abroad, providing accommodation
and social security for patients in the given country of stay and helping in gaining
financial means for the treatment. Sometimes, the waiting list for operation is very
long in Poland.
In the case of such a serious diseaise like cirrhosis, each day
is of the essence. If left alone, parents would not win the battle for their child's
life.
Presently, LIVER association cooperates with clinics in Paris
and Brussels among others.
LIVER association takes care of children after transplant as well (patients both
Polish and foreign clinics), because they need continuous specialized medical care (like
periodical examinations demanded by hospitals in whitch transplant was carried out) and
also expensive medicines (like these preventing the transplant rejection).
Since June 1992 till now, thanks to LIVER association's activites, 63 chldren have been
successfully treated and have undergone the liver transplant.
In the years from 1996 to the end of 2001, thanks to the help of the
Association and donations, it has become possible to conduct 44 operations of liver
transplant and 16 complex surgical operations abroad. In case of 72 children,
preservative treatment was employed and 56 children were examined in West-Eutopenian
clinics. These examinations were mostly such as health status cheks after transplant
done in those clinics.
The Association is developing cooperation with humanitarian organizations all over Europe. Thanks to that cooperation and because of the effects of the nationwide Association's efforts, we could provide medicine of velue of 160.000 PLN for 61 children and refund recipes for purchased medicine of the total amount of almost 180.000 PLN and also we were able to supply 18 dependants with other humanitarian help.
In that time there were 7 deaths of children, who didn't live to the operations. Funds collected for their treatment were donated (according to the Association's regulations) to finance surgical interventions for other children.
